Abstract

This study is dedicated to the owners and teachers of private commercial schools in Imperial Austria between 1834 and 1918. The authors present them as a traditional, significant and distinctive part of the commercial educational infrastructure. The characteristic features of these schools are identified in the text, with particular attention to their owners, teachers and the quality of instruction. Based on archival and printed sources, the study shows to what extent school owners were involved in teaching and how financial motives influenced their approach to designing curricula, selecting teachers and providing education. In other words, to what extent private commercial schools appeared as a profit-making enterprise and to what extent as an educational institution.
