John Everatt, PhD, is a Professor of Education in the College of Education, Health and Human Development at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
He received a PhD from the University of Nottingham in the UK, and has lectured on education and psychology programmes at universities in New Zealand and the UK. His work focuses on literacy acquisition and developmental learning difficulties, such as dyslexia. This work takes an individual differences approach to learning and aims to support children (and adults) who struggle to acquire skills in reading and writing. Such difficulties in reading and writing can lead to poor educational and employment attainment, and may lead to negative consequences to self-esteem, attention and motivation, and well-being.
Research that identifies best practice will help reduce these negative consequences and allow individuals to reach their full potential in education. His research also considers literacy learning across different language contexts, which has led to investigations in European, South-East Asian, African and Arabic-related languages/dialects, as well as studies of bilingual and second language learners, including in NZ. An understanding of how the context of learning influences reading and writing will also inform best practice when working with individuals with learning difficulties.
